Notes for Albert David Hall
His WWI draft registration card, issued in 1917/1918 (the images on Ancestry do not show the side of the card that has the date it was filed), says Albert Hall, age 45, residence Morehead, Ky, born 4 Nov 1872 in Rowan Co., Ky, occupation farmer, self-employed, nearest relative Martha B. Hall.
Phil McBrayer's notes, based mostly on interviews with his father and other relatives, lists four marriages for Albert D. Hall: Millie Prather, Billie McClain, Mary Clinkenbeard, and Rachel Sloan, the latter noted as "Brit Sloan's widow, Jack's mother". Rowan County marriage records list the marriage to Millie Prather, which was apparently very brief. Belle was the mother of all of his children; Albert’s obituary refers to her as “Martha McClain”, and also mentions Rachel Sloan. I’ve found no official record of Mary Clinkenbeard (other than the 1930 census), nor have I found a date for the marriage to Rachel Fultz Sloan. It may have been in Elliott Co.
His obituary in the Rowan County News of Thursday, July 31, 1958, read “Albert Hall, Native Citizen, Dies at Age 87 - Funeral services for a pioneer Rowan County citizen, Albert Hall, were conducted at 11 o’clock Monday morning at Lane Funeral Home with interment in Lee Cemetery. Mr. Hall, 87 years of age, lived his entire life in the county. He was born near Morehead Nov. 4, 1870, son of the late George and Susan Hall. He had hundreds of close and distant relatives living in Rowan County.
Mr. Hall married Martha McClain, who passed away in 1922. They were the parents of the following six surviving children: Leslie Hall, Parkersburg, W. Va.; Mrs. Emma McKinney, Bangor; Mrs. Susanna McGuire, Manito, Okla.; Harry Hall, Dayton, O.; Mrs. Carrie Royse, Urbana, O.; and Mrs. Hannah Royse, Morehead. After the death of his first wife, he married Rachael Sloan, who survives. Other immediate survivors are 20 grandchildren.
Mr. Hall was a member of the Christian Church. Funeral services were conducted by Reverends Luther Bradley and Ted Greene.”
Notes for Martha Belle McClain
The 1900 census lists her as age 22, born April 1878.
There is no child under 5 named Belle McClain or Martha McClain in the 1880 census of Rowan, Morgan, Fleming, Bath, Elliott or Carter counties. The 1910 and 1920 censuses, however, are more suggestive of a birthdate around 1872 for Martha Belle, and there is a Martha McClain age 8 listed in the 1880 census of Rowan Co., daughter of James and Emily McClain.
Another factor supporting this identification is that in 1910 both the Albert D. Hall and Martha B. McClain family, and the David Marion McClain (son of James & Emily) and Elizabeth Mays family, were living in Oklahoma - Albert and Martha Belle in Tillman Co., and Marion and Elizabeth in Grady Co, although they had moved to Tillman Co. by 1920. In between those dates, David Marion and Elizabeth’s son Albert was born in Boyd Co., Ky in 1914. This suggests that the two families moved to Oklahoma about 1909, and returned to Kentucky sometime between 1910 and 1914, then the McClain family went back to Oklahoma between 1915 and 1920, while the Albert Hall family remained in Kentucky. Note also that Albert and Belle’s children include James, Emma and Marion. Altogether this is enough circumstantial evidence that I am identifying Albert’s wife Martha Belle McClain with James and Emily’s daughter, although further evidence such as a marriage or death record is needed to make it definite.
Albert’s obituary reported that Martha Belle died in 1922, but I cannot find her in the Kentucky death records. Perhaps she died in another state while visiting one of their children. At the time, Leslie was living in West Virginia, and Susan and Emma were in Oklahoma.
Notes for Albert David & Martha Belle (Family)
Date of marriage is estimated from the 1900 and 1910 censuses and the birthdate of their oldest son Leslie, as being between April and Sept of 1892. Their marriage is not recorded in Rowan Co.
Census
1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, enumerated 27 June, lists on p. 21B as family #403

Jan 1897; John W., son, 1, b. May 1899. All born Ky Ky Ky. The date of birth for Albert is wrong, so I do not trust the other dates either.
1910 census of Red River township, Tillman Co., Oklahoma, enumerated 29 April, lists on p. 10A as family #162/164:
Hall, Albert, 38, farmer, 2nd marriage, married 17 years, b. Ky Ky Indiana; Martha B., wife, 39, 1st marriage, married 17 years, b. Ky Ky Ky; Susan Annie, dau, 14; Esrie, son, 12; Emma, dau, 11; Annie, dau, 8; Harry, son, 4; Carrie, dau, 4; Marian, son, 1 6/12. All children born Ky Ky Ky.
The age for Emma is off by at least a year, more likely two years, since she did not appear in the 1900 census, and her brother John was born in May 1899.
1920 census of Rowan Co., Ky, p. 184A, enumerated 2 Feb, lists on p. 17A as family #206/210:

See notes for Albert’s third marriage, to Mary Susan Clinkenbeard, for the 1930 census reading.
