Rowan Co. birth records, on LDS microfilm #216839, list Abram A. Cross, b. 1 Mar 1858, son of John A. Cross and Merry Ann Pettit, place of birth North Fork of Triplett. (This record is extracted into the IGI batch C517931, page 234, with the mother’s name given as “Mercy Ann Pettit.” The clerk made his lowercase ‘a’s wide and open at the top, exactly like ‘u’, and made ‘r’ and ‘e’ both look like an ‘i’ with no dot, so looking at a name in isolation it would be easy to read ‘ar’ as ‘err’ or ‘erc’, but when comparing other names like “Samuel” or “Rowan” you can see that the handwriting is consistent in making open-topped a’s.)

His death certificate states Abe Crase, age 77 years 4 months, born March 1, 1858 in Morgan Co., died 18 July 1935 in Wagner, Rowan Co., Ky, married, husband of Martha A. Crose, father John Crase born Morgan Co., mother’s maiden name Mary Ann Petitt, cause of death stomach cancer, informant Jesse Cras, Hamm, burial in Crix, Ky.

His gravestone lists his date of death as 26 July 1935, but it must have been erected some time after death and the date remembered as one week off.

Family bible1 has entry "Martha A. Pettit was Born August 20th 1861", and another entry "Abraham Crose And Martha Petet was married May the 6th 1880"

Her death certificate (Vol. 56, #27969) states Martha A. Crose, age 80 years, 10 months 11 days, born 20 Dec 1862 in Rowan Co., died 20 Dec 1942 in Rowan Co., widowed, father Press Pettitt, mother’s maiden name Mary Riddle, both born in Rowan Co., cause of death chronic interstitial nephritis, informant Amanda Lambert, Elliottsville, Ky, burial in Crix Cemetery.

The day and month of death have apparenty been misentered in the birth fields, since the reported age at death implies a birthdate of 9 Feb 1862, which is not consistent with any other records.

Her gravestone has her birthdate as 23 Aug 1863, which does not match the family bible record. It was, however, a bible belonging to and filled out by her sister-in-law Emma Jane (Clark) Petitt, Jessie’s wife, so it was not a record made at the time of birth, and Emma may have entered the wrong birthdate for her. But the 1870 census record, which lists her as 8 in June 1870, is consistent with a birthdate in late 1861 or early 1862.

Abe and Martha were first cousins, since Abe’s mother Mary Ann Pettit was a sister of Martha’s father Preston Pettit.

1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, taken June 29, p. 203a, lists in Morehead, family #418:
Abraham Cross, b. May 57, age 43; Martha, b. Apr 60, age 40; John, b. Apr 82, age 18; Jessie (son), b. Mar 84, age 16; Sammie, b. Feb 86, age 14; Lizzie, b. Jan 88, age 12; Willie, b. Apr 90, age 10; Henry, b. May 92, age 8. Married 20 yrs, 6 children, 6 living. All family members and parents born in Ky.

I cannot find this family in the 1910 census.

1920 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Farmers precinct, enumerated 31 Jan, lists on p. 12B as family #130/131:
Crose, Abe, 59, farmer; Martha, wife, 55; Anna May, dau, 15. All born Ky Ky Ky.

1930 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Wagoner precinct, enumerated 9 April, lists on p. 4A as family #63:
Crose, Abraham, 70, farmer, age at first marriage 21; Martha Ann, wife, 66, age at first marriage 18; Henry, son, 29, age at first marriage 21, farmer; Esta, dau (but should be dau-in-law), 24, age at first marriage 18; Ruthie, granddau, 8; Rossie, grandson, 5; Teddy, grandson, 3 8/12; Lafey, grandson, 1 6/12. All born Ky Ky Ky.

1940 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Clearfield, enumerated 3 May, lists on p. 15A as household #227, on Slab Camp Rd:
Crose, Martha, 79, widowed, born in Kentucky, living in same house in 1935.

The following two households are headed by her sons Jesse Crose and Sammie Crose.
