Notes for Walter F. Crose
Jesse Petitt's family bible
1 has two entries following that for the marriage of Abraham Crose and Martha Petitt. The first says "Walter F. Cornet was born November the 7th 1880". The second says "Walter F. Crose was born November the 7 1880". Lila Petitt Chadwell and Ola Petitt McBrayer and others say that this is because Martha Pettit was pregnant by her brother-in-law Jesse Cornett at the time that she married Abraham Crose. Walter was raised as a Crose, though, so I've entered him in this family.
His WW I Draft Registration card, issued in 1917/1918, records Walter Crose, age 37, residence Crix, Ky, born 15 Feb 1881, occupation farmer, self-employed, nearest relative Mary Lizzie Crose, wife.
The above birthdate is in conflict with the one in the family bible.
His death certificate records Walter Crose, age 70, birthdate unknown, born in Kentucky, died 3 Oct 1951 at Gallipolis State Institute, Gallipolis, Gallia Co., Ohio, usual residence New Boston, Scioto Co., Ohio, married, father Abe Crose, mother’s maiden name Emma Pelt, cause of death congestive heart failure, contributory causes arteriosclerosis and epilepsy, informant records of Gallipolis State Institute, burial in Crose Cemetery, Morehead, Brown Co., Ky.
His gravestone in Crix Cemetery says Walter Crose, 1886 - 1951.
Notes for Mary Elizabeth Mathews
Her gravestone has the dates 1885 - 1972, but she was probably really born around 1883, judging by census and marriage records.
Her sister Nancy’s 1961 obituary listed a surviving sister, Mrs. Mary Buck of Milldale Rd., city not mentioned, but probably either Portsmouth or New Boston, Ohio.
The Kentucky death index lists Mary E. Buck, age 91, died 25 Aug 1972 in Rowan Co., residence same.
Notes for Walter F. & Mary Elizabeth (Family)
Rowan Co. marriage book 3, p. 190-191 records marriage on 12 Feb 1899 of Walter Crose, 18, farmer, residence Fraley, born and mother born in Rowan Co., father born Morgan Co., to Mary E. Matthews, 16, residence Elliottsville, at A. B. Crose's by Wm. R. Mitchell, witnesses Gordon Kegley and John Peddet, surety by Abe Crose.
