Family history by Mrs. Hassard Hall says John M. Hall b. 28 Jan 1843. Most of the birthdates for children in this family, esp. those born after 1880, are from her account. She lists the first child as "Edward" b. 17 Nov 1869. She also lists a "Minta" b. 20 Nov 1871, but that conflicts with the birthdate of Mary Lou b. Jan 1872. It is probably the Arminta listed in the Rowan Co death records as having died on 6 March 1876 at 14 months.

She was listed as age 7 in 1850, and as age 12 in 1860, implying a date of birth between 1843 and 1848.

1870 census of Bath Co., KY, lists on p. 83:
John M. Hall: 26; Susan: 21; James: 7/12, b. Nov; Troy Roberts: 11; Annie Hall: 75. Annie is John's mother. Troy is Susan’s brother; he was listed as Mitchell in the 1860 census.
1880 census of Rowan Co., KY, Morehead prec., lists family #43:
John Hall, 36; Martha S., 25; Jas S., 10; Mary L., 8; Anna, 6; Nannie, 6; Arminah, 3/12.
I cannot find this family in the 1900 census, even examining every page of Rowan and surrounding counties, and doing a nationwide search on the less common names like Ches* Hall or Isaac Hall. (John, Martha and Susan are too common as names to be practical for a nationwide search.) Either they were not enumerated, or they were living in another area and their last name has been misindexed.

Hall, John, 66; wife Martha S., 61; married 46 yrs, 10 children, 7 living; son Chesie M., 23; dau-in-law Betty, 23, married 0 yrs, second marriage for both; daughter Anna, 35, married 10 yrs, 2 children, 2 living; grandson Purvis, Cecil, 9; granddau Odie, 6; grandau Hall, Delia, 3.
Everyone is listed as born in Kentucky, including John's parents, though they were really born in Virginia. The Purvis children would appear to be Anna's, but she is not listed as a Purvis (she has the long dash in the surname column that the enumerator used like a ditto mark.) Delia is a daughter of Chess and his first wife Nola Cooper.
