Her death certificate records Rosie McClain, age 73 years 14 days, born 8 Nov 1874 in Rowan Co, Ky, died at home in Morehead, Rowan Co., Ky, on 22 Nov 1947, widow, father Henry C. Harris, mother’s maiden name Elizabeth Weaver, both born in Ky, cause of death cardiac failure, informant Bethel Hall, Clearfield, Ky.

In 1930 Rosa was listed with her daugther Motie and her husband Everett Jones as Rosa McClain, mother-in-law, 55, widowed, b. Ky Ky Ky.

Most of my information on the family of John McClain and Rosa Harris is from their granddaughter Oleta J. (Hall) Marshall, daughter of Leafie Jane McClain and Bethel G. Hall.

1900 census of Rowan Co., KY, Morehead, lists as family #413:
John McClain, 40, b. Feb 1860; Rossie, 26, b. Mar 1874; married 5 yrs, 4 children, 4 living; Lizzie, 4; b. May 1896; Blanch, 2, b. May 1898.
The preceding household is headed by Rosa’s parents. Her two sons Fred and Millard by her first husband Ollie Crawford are living with them. Together with the two daughters listed here, that would account for Rosie’s four reported living children.
The dates for John, Rosa, and Leafie are all wrong, so the date for the baby Blanche is not to be trusted either. This is probably one of the families where the enumerator made up the dates3.
According to the birthdates Oleta gave me, at the time this census was taken Lillie would be 5 (almost 6), Leafie would be 3 (almost 4), and Mote would be just turned 1. Oleta said her mother did not have any sister named Blanche.
