His death certificate states Robert Royse, age 70 years 9 months 21 days, born 2 Dec 1868 in Ky, died 23 Oct 1938 in Elliottsville, Rowan Co., Ky, farmer, married, father William Royse, mother’s maiden name Anna Riddle, cause of death Bright’s disease, informant Dr. Silas Caudill, Elliottsville, Ky, burial in Royse Cemetery.

His gravestone has his date of birth as 2 Dec 1866, but the death certificate is more consistent with the census records.

Be careful not to confuse him with Robert E. Royse, son of Hiram T. Royse and Artemisia Moore, born 17 July 1868, who married Mina Ann Garrett, and died 16 June 1923 in Fleming Co.

I cannot find Callie in the 1870 or 1880 censuses. There is a Sarah C. Mannin in Carter Co., daughter of Tubal Mannin(g) and Elizabeth Brown, listed as age 2 in the 1870 census and as age 10 in 1880, whom many people identify with Callie, but no evidence is cited for that identification.

In 1940 she was recorded with her daughter Addie as Callie Royse, mother-in-law, age 72, widowed, b. Kentucky, living in Elliottsville, Rowan Co., Ky in 1935. Callie’s was one of the lines with supplemental questions; they record that both her parents were born in Kentucky, she has only been married once, first married at age 18, and has given live birth to 7 children. That question must have been misinterpreted as the number of children still living, because the censuses have record of 8.

Rowan Co., Ky marriage book A, p. 11, records the marriage on 5 Aug 1887 of William R. Royse and Callie Mannin.

Royse, Robert, 41, farmer; Calla, wife, 39, first marriage for both, married 22 years, mother of 8 children, 8 living; Willie, son, 20; Asa, son, 19; Rollie, son, 15; Addie, dau, 12; Hattie, dau, 11; Flora, dau, 9; Coldiron, Myrtle, granddau, 4; Ollie, grandson, 3. All born Ky Ky Ky.

1920 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Hogtown precinct, enumerated 23 Jan, lists on p. 12B as family #226/229:
Royce, Bob, 51, farmer; Callie, wife, 50; Rollie, son, 24; Flora, dau, 19; Ora, son, 9; Maud, dau, 8; Larine, dau, 9/12. All born Ky Ky Ky.

The three younger children should be recorded as grandchildren. Ora and Maude are really children of Bob and Callie’s daughter Lula. (Lula is in West Virginia in this census year, with her second husband William H. Meadows, plus her daughter Myrtle from her first marriage, to Robert Coldiron.) Larine is probably a daughter of Flora, although perhaps of Rollie. I cannot find her in the 1930 census, nor in the Kentucky birth index under a very broad search (all Rowan Co births in 1919, all Roy* surname births in 1919, all Roy* mother’s maiden name in 1919, all Lar* and all Lau* given names in 1919, etc.), nor in the Kentucky death records or the Rowan Co cemetery records.

Royse, Robert, 60, age at first marriage 19, farmer; Callie, wife, 59, age at first marriage 18. Both born Ky Ky Ky.

There are three other Royse families on this page, but none of them are Robert’s siblings. They are all headed by children of Fleming Royse and Martha Pelfrey.
