Notes for Noah Hoskins
His WW I draft registration card, filed 5 June 1917, records Noah Hoskins, age 23, residence Craney, Ky, born 16 Dec 1893 in Seitz, Ky, farmer, married supporting wife and child.
His death certificate records Noah Hoskins, age 45 years 9 months 9 days, born 16 Dec 1893 in Magoffin Co., Ky, died 26 Sep 1939 in Craney, Rowan Co., Ky, married, husband of Lizzie Hoskins, occupation farming, father Lewis Hoskins, mother’s maiden name Sarah Collins, both born in Ky, cause of death shot with pistol by Si Perry, homicide, occurred on public highway, informant May Hoskins, Morehead R.R. 3, burial in Jones Cemetery.
According to a grandson of Oscar L. Gamble, who found the bodies of Noah and Oscar Hoskins when he was a boy of 16, the “Si Perry” in question was John Cyrus Perry (b. 9 May 1870, d. 5 Sep 1951), son of Bob Perry and Sarah Jones. Oscar Gamble was the son of Rev. Jesse Gambill and his first wife Martha Steagall. Jesse Gambill’s second wife Bessie Perry was a daughter of John Cyrus Perry. So Oscar Gamble was a stepson of Si’s daughter. The Jesse Gambill and Bessie Perry family was living next door to Si Perry, and apparently Si shot them outside his own home.
The Morehead Independent of Thursday, Sept. 28, 1939 reported the altercation thusly:
“Father, Son, Killed in Craney Gun Duel
Oscar Hoskins Dies In Attempt To Save Life Of Father, Noah
Father and son, Noah, 43, and Oscar Hoskins, 12, were killed and a neighbor, John Cy Perry, 70, seriously wounded in a gun fight at Craney Tuesday evening. The duel was understood to have arisen over some flood property belonging to Perry which had washed onto Hoskin’s property.
Perry told friends that Noah Hoskins waylaid him near his farm between 7 and 8 p.m. When Hoskins began shooting, John Cy said, he pulled out his gun, called a “squeezer”, and shot out Hoskin’s brains. The son, Oscar, twelve years old, stepped in between them to stop them and was accidentally shot and died fifteen minutes later.
Perry came to Morehead where he was treated for two bullet wounds. The coat he wore had six bullet holes, his wife reported. Perry’s wounds are considered to be serious because of his advanced age.
Lester Caskey, the coroner, held an inquest Wednesday afternoon. Deputy Sheriff Wm. McBrayer and County Attorney Richard Clay investigated the case at Craney at the same time.
The duel occurred, according to reports of persons who visited the scene, across the creek in Rowan county from John Perry’s farm, which lies in Morgan county. The ahooting apparently took place as seen from blood stains on a small rise near the road and Craney Creek.
The boy was killed with one bullet, which failed to pass through his body. The bullet will be examined by ballistic experts to determine whose gun it came from. Both men used thirty-eights.”
