His death certificate records G. W. Crose, age 82 years 9 months 28 days, born 9 Feb 1857 in Kentucky, died 6 Nov 1939 in Blaze, Morgan Co., Ky, widowed, retired farmer, father Adam Crose, mother’s maiden name Mary Jones, both born in Kentucky, cause of death hypertensive heart disease, informant Mrs. Farmer Lewis, Blaze, Ky, burial in family cemetery, undertaker Ollie Sargent, Blaze, Ky.
(Jones was the name of his mother’s first husband, not her maiden name.)
According to FindaGrave, his stone says Gary W. Crose, which is how it is indexed, but I am very skeptical of that since his name is George or G. W. in every record I’ve seen, and the cemetery is called George Crose Cemetery because it is on his land, and “Gary” was not a common name until the 1940’s. There is a photo of his stone on the web site. It is a homemade hand lettered stone with very shallow lettering, more scratched than chiseled. The letters cannot be discerned in the image, my suspicion is that it spells his name as “Gorg”, which would look like Gary when weathered.
