His WW I draft registration card, filed 5 June 1917, records James Pettit, age 22, residence Blairs Mill, Ky, born 24 Dec 1895, occupation farmer, self-employed, single.
In an email dated 9 Mar 2002, John G. Pettit writes “Chester R. Pettitt born Sept 27-1918 is my dad. He is the son of James H. Pettit and Isey Lewis and grandson of Samuel Pettit and Betty Roberts. And also I have a sworn affidavit that James H. Pettit was the name of my grandfather instead of Jim Will Pettit signed Nov-30-1941.”
The Social Security death index lists James Pettit, born 24 Dec 1894, died Jan 1986, last residence Fairborn, Greene Co., Ohio, zip 45324, SSN issued in Kentucky before 1951.
The Ohio deaths database lists James H. Pettit, age 90, died 17 Jan 1986 in Xenia, Greene Co., Ohio, residence Fairborn, Greene Co., Ohio, married.
If the birthdate from his Social Security record is correct, James should have been listed as 5 in 1900 and 15 in 1910. But in 1900 the only child living with Samuel and Betty was Chester age 10 months, and in 1910 the oldest child was listed as Jim Will, age 15, with the second oldest being Lilbern age 8. Presumably his middle name was changed sometime after he was 15, but where was he in 1900? Also, Samuel and Bettie were not married until August 1896. So either James was really born in 1896, and somehow skipped in the 1900 census, or else he was adopted some time between 1900 and 1910.

She was recorded in the 1900 and 1910 censuses as Icy A., but her children and grandchildren knew her as Isey May. (Elbert’s obituary uses that name.)
