Census Notes for Nancy [Fulks]
She was recorded as age 46 in 1850 and age 65 in 1860. If she is the same wife who was married to Jacob Fulks in the 1820 and 1830 censuses, then the age brackets suggest that the earlier date is more accurate.
Notes for Jacob & Nancy (Family)
My primary interest in this family is that Nancy’s second husband was my GGGG Grandfather, Charles McClain. I traced their sons in hopes that one of their death records would show Nancy’s maiden name, but no such luck.
The proper spelling of the family’s surname appears to be Fulks, but in some census records they are recorded as Fultz. This is probably mostly due to greater familiarity of the enumerators with the large John Fultz & Dicey Sloan clan who arrived in Morgan and Elliott through Floyd and Lawrence counties, and heavily intermarried with the Adkins and Fraleys. There is no indication that Jacob Fulks is related to them, since his arrival in Kentucky was at least 20 years later.
Censuses suggest that there were three daughters born before 1830, one who died young between 1830 and 1840, and two who either married or died between 1840 and 1850.
Census
1820 census of Washington Co., Virginia, enumerated Aug 7, lists on p. 1151, line 23:
The preceding household is headed by Nicholas Fulks, age 45+, probably Jacob’s father.
1830 census of Washington Co., Virginia, lists on p. 244, line 26:
Fulks, Jacob. whites: 1 male 30-39, 1 female 30-39; 1 male 5-9, 2 females 5-9, 1 male under 5, 1 female under 5; slaves: 1 male 10-23, 1 male under 10, 2 females under 10.
1840 census of Smyth Co., Virginia, lists on p. 19, line 16:
Jacob Fulks, 1 male 40-49, 1 female 40-49; 2 males 15-19, 2 females 15-19, 1 male 10-14, 2 males 5-9, 2 males under 5.
1850 census of Morgan Co., Ky, lists as family #864:
Calvin Fultz, 22, Va, farmer; Melvina, 18, Ky; Isaac, 6/12, Ky; Nancy Fultz, 46, Va; James, 19, Va; John, 16, Va; Nicholas, 15, Va; George, 12, Va.
Calvin would be Nancy’s son, and the brother of James, John, Nicholas and George.
In 1860 Nancy was remarried to Charles McClain, and George was living with them. Nicholas Fulks was in prison in Frankfort, and James and John had established their own households.
