Morgan County birth records list the birth on 16 July 1853 of twins, Hansford W. and Lucinda C., to Josiah Conn and Francis Ramsey of Laurel Fork. (Ramsey is not really Frances’ maiden name, but the surname of her first husband.)

She is listed as Ellen age 8 in the 1870 census. The first name of “Nancy” is based on the marriage record and the 1880 census, which lists her as “N. Ellen”. But William and Anna already had a daughter Nancy who was listed as 10 in 1850 and 20 in 1860. I can find no marriage record for any Nancy Mays between 1860 and 1870. It is quite possible that this Nancy Ellen is not really a daughter of William and Anna, but is instead an out-of-wedlock daughter of one of their older daughters, either the Nancy Mays who was born about 1839/1840 or of Frances Susan (who had several children out of wedlock by at least three different fathers.) If the older Nancy died in childbirth, then the baby might have been named after her mother, then raised by her grandparents and called by her middle name.

Her death certificate records Ellen Conn, age 50 years 1 month 17 days, born 3 Oct 1864 in Eliett Co., died 16 Sep 1914 in Salt Lick, Bath Co., Ky, married, father John Mays, born in Eliett, mother’s name unknown, cause of death inflammation of bowels, informant blank, burial info blank.

The father’s name is probably incorrect. Although William and Anna did have a son John, he married Celia Slusher (my GGG Aunt) about 1867, and if he had a young daughter at the time of his marriage, one would assume that he and Celia would have raised her, rather than his parents.

Elliott County marriage records list the marriage of "Fansford W. Conn" to "Nancy J. Mays" on 17 Dec 1878.

Conn, Hansford, 48, b. July 1851, Ky Va Va, farmer; Ellen, wife, 37, b. Nov 1862, Ky Ky Ky; Henry C., son, 19, b. Nov 1880; Levi, son, 17, b. Aug 1882; Essie O., dau, 9, b. Aug 1890; Jerry W., son, 5, b. May 1895. All children born Ky Ky Ky.

There are five other Conn families on this page. One is Hansford’s brother Samuel, but the others are cousins, three of them sons of Andrew Jackson Conn and Sarah Jane Flannery.
