Notes for John Newton Day
His WW I draft registration card, filed 5 June 1917, records John Newton Day, age 25/26 (overwritten), residence Clearfield, Rowan Co., Ky, born 29 Feb 1891 in Bangor, Ky, married supporting a wife.
There is, of course, no Feb 29th in 1891. Since the age is overwritten and it is impossible to tell which of the digits is the original and which the correction, the age does not give much help in deciding whether it should be 28 Feb 1891 (which would make him 26) or 29 Feb 1892 (which would make him 25). The 1900 census said Feb 1891, but his WW II draft registration says 29 Feb 1892.
That card, filed 29 Apr 1942, records John Newt Day, age 50, residence 405 Exeter St., Baltimore, Maryland, born 29 Feb 1892 in Moorhead, Kentucky, contact Mrs. J. Day, same address, employer Maryland Steel Product Co., Bush-Ridgby St., Baltimore, Md.
The SSDI lists John Day, born 28 Feb 1891, died July 1892, last residence Ashland, Boyd Co., Ky.
The Kentucky death index lists John N. Day, age 91, died 2 July 1982 in Boyd Co., residence same.
Census Notes for John Newton & Beulah May (Family)
1920 census of Boyd Co., Ky, Ashland ward 5, enumerated 15 Jan, lists on p. 29A as family #462/686, at 627 Bath Ave:
Day, John W., 53, laborer; Cordellia, 52, wife; John (V. ?), son, 30, laborer; Beluah (Belvah?), wife, 23; Mervil, son, 2; Evert, son, 18; Cora, dau, 16; Frank, son, 12. All born Ky Ky Ky.
The relationship for John’s wife should be recorded as daughter-in-law, and that of Mervil as grandson. (Either that, or the three of them should be given their own family number and moved to the end, with John listed as head.) The middle initial for John looks to me like a V. Ancestry.com has transcribed it as L. But judging by John’s draft cards, it is apparently really an N with the rightmost stroke being so short and starting so high that it looks like a serif.
1930 census of Boyd Co., Ky, Ashland ward 4, enumerated 5 April, lists on p. 8B as family #181/190, at 2147 Thomas St:
Day, John N., 26, age at first marriage 21, burner at scrap yard; Beulah, wife, 23, age at first marriage 18; Mervill, son, 12; Gertrude, dau, 9; Charles M., son, 7; Mary M., dau, 5. All born Ky Ky Ky.
