Notes for Richard & Sarah S. (Family)
I have no Wells ancestry; this family is in my database because many of their descendants intermarried with my Downing relatives in Menifee Co.
Census
1850 census of Morgan Co., Ky, (district unstated) enumerated 20 Aug, lists on p. 217 as family #314:
Richard Wells, 46, farmer; Sarah, 44; George, 17; William, 15; Elizabeth, 13; Hester, 10; Samuel, 8; Benjamin, 4; John Wells, 23, laborer; Martha, 21; James Wells, 22. All born in Ky.
There are no relationships listed in this census, but the repetition of the surname for John and James, as well as the staggered birth orders, suggest that Martha is John’s wife.
1860 census of Morgan Co., Ky, division 2, enumerated July 26, lists on p. 94 as family #622:
Richard Wells, 55, farmer; Sarah, 53; William, 25; Benjamin, 15. All born in Kentucky.
1870 census of Morgan Co., Ky, Dry Ridge precinct, enumerated 28 June, lists on p. 3 as family #17:
<dittos>, Sarah, 65; Wells, Richard, 66. Both born in Kentucky.
The family immediately above (#16) is their son Benjamin. It looks like Sarah was originally entered as part of Ben’s household, and then Richard was added on the line below, and the family number placed on Sarah’s line. The family below (#18) is their son George.
