Notes for Savel Samuel Hardin
I have not seen any record that shows him with both the names Samuel and Savel. All three of his marriage records have his name as Samuel, at least according to the published transcriptions. But the 1850 and 1860 censuses record his name as Savel, and the death certificate of his daughter Nancy (for which the informant was L. P. Gearhart) lists Nancy’s father as “Save Hardin”. It is quite possible that the marriage records have been misread.
Notes for Mary A. Harris
Many online family trees identify her with the following death certificate:
Mary A. Terrell, age 80 years 9 months 30 days, born 1 Aug 1833 in Ky, died 31 May 1914 in Gray precinct, Knox Co., Ky, widowed, father Elijah Harris, mother’s maiden name Rosie Moore, both born in Ky, cause of death interitis, informant Silas Pease, Blase, Ky, burial in Calvery.
That is incorrect, though, because Solomon S. Terrell married Mary Harris on 4 Mar 1852 in Knox Co., and they are enumerated there in the censuses in 1860 and 1870, when this Mary Harris was recorded in Morgan Co.
Notes for Savel Samuel & Mary A. (Family)
Morgan Co. marriage records list the marriage on 8 March 1855 of Samuel Hardin, age 32, born on Elk Horn, near Lexington, Fayette Co., Ky, to Mary Harris, age 22, born near Moore’s, Morgan Co., witnesses H. D. Nickell & wife, in Morgan Co. by Joseph D. Hunt.
Census
1860 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, enumerated 13 July, lists on p. 16 as family #114/117:
Savel Harden, 58, farmer; Mary, 29; Amilda E., 9; Malinda, 4; Nancy A., 2.
All are listed as born in Ky, although that is inconsistent with some other records for Mary. (Not only the 1870 census, but also the death record of their daughter Nancy.) The name transcribed as “Savel” might be Sauel or Sawl, but it is definitely not a misreading of Saml - there are many other m’s and n’s on the page, and the clerk made all of them with rounded tops, while this word has three spikes between the a and l.
1870 census of Morgan Co., Ky, Blairs Mill precinct, Bangor P.O., enumerated 21 July, lists on p. 4 as family #29:
Hardin, Mary, 38, b. Indiana; Malinda, 14; Nancy A., 11; William H., 9; Zerilda J., 7. All children born in Ky.
