The attribution of William McCarty as the father of Mary Ann Staton’s first two daughters, Louisiana and Alabama, is from online family trees at Ancestry.com. I do not know what the original source is. There is no marriage recorded in Bath Co. for William and Mary Ann. I do not know if they were ever married, or if the girls were born out of wedlock. The latter seems more likely, given that I have not seen any records which show their surname as McCarty.

Louisiana was listed as a Staton in 1870 (with Mary Ann’s parents) and as a Sorrell in 1880, and Alabama was listed as a Sorrell in most records.
