Notes for Mathias S. Hoover
His death certificate records Matthias S. Hoover, age 71 years 6 months 29 days, born 10 May 1844 in Missouri, died 9 Dec 1916 in Jefferson township, Linn Co., Missouri, married, father’s name Hoover, mother’s maiden name Elizabeth Brookshire, birthplaces not obtainable, cause of death chronic valvular disease of heart, informant Mrs. M. S. Hoover, Laclede, Mo, burial in Hoover Cemetery, Browning, Mo.
The year of birth is very likely incorrect, since he was listed as age 3 in 1850, age 13 in 1860, age 22 in 1870, and age 33 in 1880, all censuses enumerated in June.
Census
In the 1850 census, taken in June, he is listed in Sullivan Co., Missouri, as Mathias, age 3, b. Mo, son of Christopher Hoover age 35 with wife Elizabeth age 33, both born in Tennessee.
In the 1860 census he is listed in Sullivan Co., Missouri, as Matthias, age 13, b. Mo, son of the widowed Elizabeth Hoover age 45, b. Tenn. This census year’s data is also relative to June 1, although the visit was on 18 July.
(I am not entering the census records for the full family since my interest is only in his daughters Elizabeth and Carrie, not in the Hoover family. Mainly I just wanted to document why I am entering his year of birth as 1847 instead of 1846 as it says in the 1900 census or 1844 as it says on his death certificate.)
Census Notes for Mary Hooker
In the 1860 census she is listed in Linn Co., Missouri, as Mary Hooker age 10, daughter of Jeremiah Hooker age 50 and his wife Mary age 49, both listed as born in South Carolina, although that does not agree with later records for Mary.
Notes for Mathias S. & Mary (Family)
Sullivan Co., Missouri marriage books record the marriage on 24 June 1869 of Mr. Matthias Hoover to Miss Mary Hooker.
This page is not intended to represent a complete family group. I am entering this couple only to document the parents of Elizabeth Hoover who married George W. Riddle, and Carrie Susan Hoover who married his brother Leonard Edward Riddle.

The father’s place of birth for Delbert is rather odd, unless he is illegitimate, since none of Matthias’s children were recorded as born in Indiana.
