Her death certificate records Nancy Sergent, age 76 years 3 months 30 days, born 28 May 1835 in Rusel Co., Va, died 17 Oct 1911 in Panther Branch precinct, Morgan Co., Ky, marital status blank, father Isac Hart, born in N.C., mother’s maiden name Celia Combs, born in Rusel Co., Va, cause of death stomach trouble, informant G. A. Sergent, Crany.

1870 census of Morgan Co., Ky, Blairs Mill precinct, enumerated 22 July, lists on p. 8 as family #61/58:
Sargent, Nancy, 35, b. Va; Hugh, 13, b. Va; Green, 11, b. Va; John, 9, b. Ky; Frank, 6, b. Ky.

1880 census of Morgan Co., Ky, Blairs Mill precinct, undated but relative to June 1, lists on p. 19 as family #163:
Sergent, Nancy, 44, b. Va N.C. Va; John, 19, son; Frank, 15, son; William, 10, son; Ellsworth, 7, son. All sons listed as born Ky Va Va, although it really should be Ky Ky Va for Frank, William and Ellsworth. Apparently Nancy was maintaining the fiction that John Sargent was the father of all her children.

In 1900 and 1910 she was enumerated with her son Dort, and listed as the mother of 6 children, 4 living. The two who had died by 1900 were apparently Hugh and John.

The children of James Lewis and Nancy Hart have the surname Sargent (or Sergent) because that was her name as a widow of John Sargent. Some records for the children list their father as John Sargent/Sergent, but he died before they were born.
