His death certificate records John E. Swim, age 66, born April 1867 in Ohio, died 2 May 1933, married, husband of Marry Swim, occupation quariman at stone mill, father John Swim, mother’s maiden name Sarah White, both born in Ky, cause of death lobar pneumonia, informant Alex Swim, burial in Silome.

Be careful not to confuse him with his first cousin John J. Swim, who was only one month older.

In the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census records, John reports his birthplace as Ohio. But in both of the censuses in which he appears as a child with his parents (at 3 in 1870 and at 13 in 1880), his birthplace is recorded as Kentucky. It is the same John Swim, though, based on his death certificate.

Rowan Co., Ky marriage book 7, p. 361, records the marriage on 14 Apr 1911 of John E. Swim and Mary Grayson.

1920 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Farmers precint, enumerated 31 Jan, lists on p. 15A as family #181/182:
Swim, John, 52, b. Ohio Ky Ky; Mary, wife, 32, b. Ky Ky Ky; Walter, son, 7; Dave, son, 3; Gilbert, son, 1 7/12. All children born Ky Ky Ky (which is inconsistent with John’s reported birthplace.)

1930 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Farmers precinct part 2 (Bluestone, Freestone and Hungry Branch), enumerated 9 April, lists on p. 7B as family #39:
Swim, John E., 62, age at first marriage 21, laborer at stone mill; Mary, wife, 42, age at first marriage 22; Walter, son, 17; Dave, son, 18; Gilbert, son, 11; Clara, dau, 9; George, son, 6; Ruby, dau, 3. All born Ky Ky Ky.
