A scrap of paper in the family bible of Ina Brown, daughter of Henry and Matlida’s son Tom, says “Grandpa Brown took his mothers maiden name of Brown but she was never married. Kate Brown. His father's name Jim Lewis.”

Other conversations identify this Jim Lewis as James Hopkins Lewis, and say that he had several children with different women, none of whom he married.

Her death certificate records Matilda Ann Brown, age 68 years 2 months 9 days, born 3 Sep 1870 in Morgan Co., Ky, died 12 Nov 1938 in Shelby, Richland Co., Ohio, residence 116 West Park Dr., married, wife of Henry Brown, father Thomas Perry, mother’s maiden name Isabel Caskey, both born in Morgan Co., Ky, cause of death acute choleseptitis and chronic myocarditis, informant Henry Brown, same address, burial in Oakland Cemetery.
