Notes for Hamilton Ison
The 1900 census gave his birthdate as July 1834, but he was listed as age 12 in the 1850 census and age 24 in the 1860 census, so he was probably really born in 1836 or 1837.
Notes for Phoebe Ann Hill
Her birthdate is very approximate. She was listed as age 7 in the 1850 census, age 19 in the 1860 census, age 32 in the 1870 census, age 39 in the 1880 census, 62 born Dec 1837 in the 1900 census, 67 in the 1910 census, 80 in the 1920 census, and 93 in the 1930 census.
The birthdate most commonly claimed by descendants is 1837. However, it is quite unlikely that she would have been listed as age 7 in 1850 if she was already 10 or more. Another factor arguing against an earlier birthdate is that her parents were married in October of 1838, and she has an older brother Edward who was listed as 10 in 1850. So I’m inclined to think she was born after 1840, most likely in 1841 or 1842.
Her death certificate records Phoebe Ison, age 97 years 3 months 10 days, birthdate blank, born in Morgan Co., Ky, died 31 March 1933 in Moon, Crockett precinct, Morgan Co., Ky, widow of Hamilton Ison, father Spencer Hill, mother’s maiden name Cyntha Williams, both born in Ky, cause of death old age, informant Nannie Ison, Moon, Ky, burial in A. Ison Cem, Moon, Ky.
The age at death would imply a birthdate of 21 Dec 1835.
Her gravestone says Pheba Ison, 1837 - 1933, but it is a modern one obviously erected by descendants well after her death.
