Census Notes for James Harvey Whitt
1880 census of Morgan Co., Ky, Caney precinct, enumerated 17 June, lists on p. 21 as family #191:
Whitt, James H., 52, widowed, farmer, b. Va Va Va; Abraham L., 18, son, single, farmer, b. Ky Va Va; Arzela, 10, dau, b. Ky Va Va; Malinda, 3, dau, b. Ky Ky Ky; Lykins, Narcissus, 25, servant, b. Ky Ky Ky, single.
In the 1870 census, Arzella was recorded in Magoffin Co with Narcissus Lykiins and her widowed mother Sarah as Arzela Lykiins, age 5 months, born Jan. Her death certificate, for which the informant was her daughter Victoria, listed her father as Harvey Whitt and her mother as Narcissus, maiden name “?”.
Malinda may be a daughter of Harvey and Narcissus as well, or a daughter of Narcissus by some other father, perhaps Harvey Burns Whitt, or perhaps born out of wedlock to of one of James Harvey Whitt’s daughters. It is unlikely that she is a daughter of James Harvey Whitt and his wife Matilda, even though Matilda lived to 1879, because (a) their first daughter was named Malinda Jane, and she lived to adulthood, so it would be unlikely they would reuse the name, (b) Matilda would have been 48 in 1877, and (c) James Harvey had a relationship with Narcissus Lykins from at least 1870 through 1880. (Note that if the “daughter” relationship to James Harvey Whitt is true, then her father’s place of birth has been reported incorrectly as Kentucky.)
