STAMPER / BARE: Looking for information on Lafayette Stamper born in 1854 and last resided in Estill Co. before becoming a patient in Eastern State Hospital, where he died in 1937. On my g-grandfather's (William G. Stamper) death certificate Lafayette was listed as the source of information. It did not list William's parents nor the relationship between Lafayette and William, and I'm trying to find out both. Lafayette has been in Mason, Lewis, Estill and Fayette Counties in KY. My ggrandfather was in Mason, Fleming, Rowan, and married Sarah Bare from Carter Co. Anyone with any information on any of this please contact me.

SORRELL / SORRELLS: I have a ton of information on Bath, Menifee, Rowan, Montgomery, Fleming and Pendleton County, KY Sorrells. I can prove the Sorrell families of this area back to William Sorrell of Caroline County, VA in 1700s and maybe further back. However I lack information on the later generations of Sorrells in the area after the last census in 1920. That information must come from personal knowledge by family members of the area. I will happily share Sorrell information on early family members in return for information on the latter generations.

EASTERLING / SKAGGS / BOWLING / MIDDLETON: I am looking for any information anyone might have about the Easterling and Skaggs families of Rowan Co.

My maternal grandfather was Samuel Easterling married to Lula Bowling (1897-1979). According to my mother, Samuel died ca 1937-1938 in Carter Co. (he fell off a bridge while working for the railroad in Soldier, Ky.), but he does not appear in the online Kentucky Death index. Their children were Clay, Luster, Eva Bernice (my mother), Olive, and Chester. Most are buried in the Clearfield Cemetery. All I know about the parents of Samuel and Lula is that Lula's mother was a Cassity.

My paternal grandfather was Mason Skaggs (1881-1953) married to MaryBelle Middleton. Some of their children were Marvin, Orville, Carl (my father), Delphi, and Gladys. Mason's parents were Daniel D. & Paulina Skaggs, whose other children included Viola who married Nathan Workman in 1908, Harlan who married Cynthia Caudill in 1912, and Omie who married Dana Reeves in 1912 (all in Rowan Co.)

Any and all information information will be greatly appreciated, because I do not have much of my own. I would especially appreciate someone checking 1937-1938 newspapers for an obituary or news item on my grandfather's death.

Cannot find anything on him such as parents, marriage, names of his wife and children or his death. Any help would be appreciated.

PETITT / SPARKS / CORNETT / FLETCHER / MAYS / MAUK: My GG Aunt, Nancy Jane Petitt (1864-1959), d/o Preston Pettit and Mary Susan Riddle, was married 4 times: (1) to Jesse H. Cornett (1856-1931, s/o Wesley Cornett & Ceattie Morris of Letcher & Rowan Co.) on 18 Nov 1880 in Rowan Co. (all 10 children are from this marriage), (2) to Rev. W. Jerry Fletcher (ca 1860-1939, s/o Alex & Jane Fletcher of Carter Co.) on 8 May 1934 in Rowan Co., (3) to Granville Mays (1864-1946, s/o Hent & Poppie Mays of Breathitt Co) on 18 Dec 1939, and (4) to Andrew J. Sparks (ca 1874-after 1959, s/o Joe Mauk & Edith Sparks of Elliott Co.) around 1954/1955, when she was in her 90's. Husbands 2 to 4 were all widowers when she married them. I would like to find out who their previous wives were, and also find the date and place for the marriage of Andrew Sparks and Nancy Jane Petitt Cornett Fletcher Mays.

PURVIS: I am researching the Purvis family of Rowan and surrounding counties. My great-grandfather, Ben Franklin Purvis, was the son of James and Sarah Purvis. Ben was born around Morehead on Oct. 1, 1864. His older brother, Joseph S., is said to have died in a fight over a girl after 1880. Any info on these or other Purvis's would be appreciated. Have extensive info on Purvis family.

BLACK / EPPERHART / RIDDLE: I am tracing all descendants of John A. Black (b. ca 1831/1832 in Tazewell Co., VA, d. 1899 in Rowan Co.), who married first Rebecca Epperhart on 16 Mar 1854 in Sandy Hook, Ky, and second Martha Ann Riddle ca 1870 in Rowan Co., after separating from Rebecca. Children of John A. Black and Rebecca Epperhart were William Riley, Christina, Margaret Ann, David, John Jr., Johnson, and Arminta. Children of John Black and Martha Ann Riddle were America, William, Martha Ann, and Louisa. (No, that is not an error, he really had two sons named William, both of whom grew to adulthood.) John Black also raised four children of Martha Riddle and her first husband John B. Clark: Sarah Ann, Samuel, Leander, and Mary. All but Samuel took the surname of their stepfather.

I put my work in book form last year and donated it to the Rowan County Public Library at Morehead, Ky. This consisted of 900 records, about 1200 pages in eight volumes. It is titled "The Descendants of John A. Black, Then and Now". I am working on an updated edition and welcome additions from any descendants.

CROSE / ELLIOTT / PETTIT / CASSITY / PERRY: My great-great-grandparents were John A. Crose, born 1827 in Morgan Co., son of Adam Crose (1799-1880) and his first cousin Sarah "Sally" Crose (1797-1851). Adam and Sally were married in Bourbon Co., Ky, on 24 Sep 1819 and moved to Morgan Co. by 1823. I have a great deal of information on the genealogy of the Crose family which I am willing to share.

According to Morgan Co. marriage records, John A. Crose married a young widow "Mrs. Mary Ann Elliott" on 17 May 1857. They had five children all born and raised in Rowan Co: Abraham b. 1858 m. Martha Ann Pettit, Rebecca b. 1860 m. Thomas Cassity, Mary b. 1863 m. Benjamin Franklin Perry, William Strib b. 1871 m. Nannie M. Cash, and Burnett b. 1872, no other data.

Rowan Co. birth records list Abraham Crose (1858) as the son of John A. Crose and Mary Ann Pettit. Does anyone know the full name of the first husband of Mary Ann (Pettit) (Elliott) Crose, when or where they married, and when he died?

[Addendum: I have determined that Mary Ann Pettit's first husband was John Elliott, age 19 in the 1850 census, son of Samuel Elliott and Frances Perry. But I'm still looking for his marriage and death dates.

HALL / QUESENBERRY / RIDDLE / THURBER: My great-great-uncle, Samuel McKee Hall (b. 18 Apr 1868 in Rowan Co.), s/o George Martin Hall and Susan Downing, married first Aretta Alice Thurber on 20 Jul 1887, second Isacie Quesenberry on 19 July 1897, and third Ida Mae Riddle (1872-1934), d/o Nathan Riddle and Mary Susan Prather, on 7 Sep 1899. All marriages in Rowan Co.

What were the dates of birth and death for the first two wives and who were their parents? Also, when and where did Samuel McKee Hall die? He was listed in the 1910 census of Rowan Co., age 42, but he is not in the Kentucky death index, so the family probably moved out of state.

McKINNEY: I am the 4th great grandson of Charles McKinney whose will was proved in Mercer County around 1798. He had a plantation that was very large. I think he may have been instrumental in forming the town of McKinney Station or what is known today as McKinney, Ky. His son Stephen was killed by an indian attack at McKinney Station. If you are from this lineage or tie into it... let's correspond. I am willing to share my McKinney roots and research. I am from the Rowan, Bath, and Morgan counties area. I know much about the McKinneys there.

PETTIT / RIDDLE / FRALEY / FRILEY: Does anyone know the death dates of Preston (Pressie or Press) Pettit (b. June 1837) and his wife Mary Susan Riddle (b. 14 Aug 1839)? Their gravestones in Trent-Black cemetery have no dates, only bronze plaques embedded into the field stones, reading "Press Pettitt - Great Grandfather" and "Mary Pettitt - Great Grandmother. The last record I have for Preston is that he was listed as a witness at the Sep 1906 wedding of John Lambert and Vesta Riddle. In March 1909 Mary remarried, so Press must have died in 1907 or 1908. (Rowan Co. marriage book 6, page 557, lists marriage of Harvey Friley, age 64, son of James & Nancy Friley, to Mary Pettit, age 68, dau of John & Adaline Riddle, on 11 March 1909, at the home of A. J. Brown, by Rev. S. J. Porter, witnesses Charles Kegley and A. J. Brown; second marriage for both spouses. It was a surprise to me to find this marriage record; nobody had ever mentioned that Mary had remarried after Pressie died.) I suspect that Harvey's surname may have really been Fraley, since Friley is not a name common in the area, but I cannot find a death record for either a Mary or Harvey Friley or Fraley of the right generation.
