Notes for Leander [Clark] Black
Leander was born a Clark, but by the time of his marriage he had taken the name of his stepfather. He and his wife Lizzie were first cousins, since their mothers Mary and Martha Riddle were twin sisters.

A clipping from an unspecified paper, reprinted in Leroy Hinton's Rowan County Local News and Jottings, says: "Cranston news - Oct 9, 1931 : Leander Black has a severe attack of blood poison in his hand." According to Dewie Black, Leander lost the hand, and asked for it to be buried, and then dug up and put in his casket with him when he died.

According to Omer Trent, nephew of Leander through his sister Martha, Leander's last meal was a shot of whiskey and some canned apricots administered by Omer himself and his wife Dorothy. Leander had really bad arthritis and always walked kind of crippled up. Stella Black Helderbrand tells the story of Leander and Lizzie keeping apples under the floor and when the grandkids would go visit them Leander would get apples out from under the floor and peel them for them to eat with just one big long piece of peeling from each apple.

I cannot find an entry for him in the Kentucky death records, as either Leander Black or Leander Clark.
Notes for Elizabeth ("Lizzie") Petitt
Double stone in Black-Trent Cemetery on Trent Ridge has stone with inscription "Lizzie Petitt Black July 10, 1870 - July 31, 1953 : Leander Black Apr 8, 1867 - Jan 20, 1938" (Note that the birthdate on the stone conflicts with the 1900 census, which gives her birthdate as 5/72, and the 1880 census, which lists her as age 8. Dianna Gilliam's database had it as 18 May 1870.)

Her death certificate (Vol. 35, #17456) records Lizzie Black, age 83 years 13 days, born 18 July 1870 in Rowan Co., Ky, died 31 July 1953 in Rowan Co., widowed, father Preston Petitt, mother’s maiden name Mary Riddle, cause of death coronary infarction due to arteriosclerosis, informant Mrs. Nancie McClain, Morehead.

Leander Black, 52; Lizzie, 30; (dau) Ola, 16; Clarica, 12.
Lizzie seems to be perpetually 30 (compare 1900 and 1910); the "daughter Ola" should be a son "Osa" or "Ocie".
