1870 census of Elliott Co., Ky, precinct 3, Sandy Hook P.O., enumerated 14 July, lists on p. 8 as family #59:
Steagall, Gabriel, 40, farmer; Clara, 31; Cornelius, 14; Jane, 11; William G., 8; Mary C., 4; John E., 1; Steagall, Gabriel Jr., 12; Briant, James M., 20, farm hand. All born in Kentucky.

Gabriel Jr. is probably the son of Gabriel’s brother Lewis, although he might instead be the son of Gabriel’s brother Cornelius. (The former fits the age better, but Cornelius died in 1864 and thus is more likely to have a son fostered out.)
