There were two Joel Markwells in Rowan Co. born only a few months apart. Be careful not to confuse this one with his cousin, son of Thomas Markwell.
His death certificate records Joel Markwell, age 81, born 24 Sep 1870 in Kentucky, died 14 June 1952 in Vernon Junction, Richland Co., Ohio, father Aaron Markwell, mother’s maiden name Susan Jackson, cause of death coronary heart disease, informant Mrs. Lenzy Shelton, burial in Oakland Cemetery, Shelby, Ohio.

Rowan Co. Ky marriage register A, p. 90, records the marriage of Ida M. Gearhart and Joel Markwell on 23 Mar 1895.

1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, enumerated 12 June, lists on p. 10B as family #203:
Markwell, Joel S., 32, b. May 1868, farmer; Ida May, wife, 20, b. Apr 1880, married 7 years, mother of 3 children, 2 living; Corbett, son, 6, b. March 1894; Corda, dau, 2, b. May 1898. All born Ky Ky Ky.
The number of years married is inconsistent with Rowan Co. marriage records, and the ages of Ida and Corbett are inconsistent with other records as well.
Three households above at #200 is the family of Joel Markwell age 26 with wife Etta age 22.
1910 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, enumerated 4 May, lists on p. 13A as family #227/229:
Markwell, Joel, 44, second marriage, married 14 years, farmer; Ida, wife, 33, first marriage, married 14 years, mother of 3 children, 3 living; Corbett, son, 13; Ethel, dau, 9; Clyde, son, 8. All born Ky Ky Ky.
The child counts for Ida are inconsistent with the 1900 census. The daughter Corda listed in the 1900 census is missing and would not have been old enough to marry, and there are two living children born after 1900. So it appears that the child count should have been at least 5/3.

Marquell, Joel, 50, farmer; Ida, wife, 43; Corbit, son, 23; Clyde, son, 17; Jessie, dau, 5. All born Ky Ky Ky.
