Notes for Hiram Lewis & Rebecca Jane (Family)
Johnson Co., Ky marriage records list the marriage on 9 Dec 1858 of Hiram F. Coldiron, 17, born Harlan Co., residence Johnson Co., to Rebecca Jane McKarty, age 17, residence Johnson Co.
In the 1880 census, Hiram is recorded in Iowa with his second wife Sarah Salyer, and a son Jonathan listed as age 8. So either Hiram and Rebecca’s daughter Minerva was born after Rebecca and Hiram had already separated, or the reported age for Jonathan is wrong.
Census
1860 census of Johnson Co., Ky, Paintsville precinct, enumerated 21 Aug, lists on p. 132 as family #842/841:
Hiram L. Coldiron, 19, b. Ky; Rebecca J., 19, b. Va; Minta L., 7/12, b. Ky.
The preceding household is headed by Rebecca’s brother Nelson, and the one before that by her parents.
1870 census of Elliott Co., Ky, Martinsburg precinct, enumerated 18 Aug, lists on p. 1 as family #6:
Coldiron, Hiram L., 26, laborer; Rebecca D., 27; Arminta, 10; Clarissa J., 8; Allice <blot>, 4; William, 2. All born in Kentucky.
Ancestry.com has transcribed Allice’s middle initial as L, but it looks more like an open-topped 4. I would have taken it for most likely an H or a U. It doesn’t look much like an M, though, which is what would fit her marriage record to Reuben Ison (Margaret) and the 1900 census (Mary A.)
