Notes for David & Martha Jane (Family)
I have no Goodpaster ancestry. This family is in my database only because three Goodpasters married Riddle relatives of mine, and I wanted to show the relationships between them. And when a couple have the same surname, I like to show the blood relationship between husband and wife. In this case, David and Martha were second cousins.
Census
1850 census of Bath Co., Ky, district 1, enumerated 20 Aug, lists on p. 173 as family #455:
David Goodpaster, 32, farmer; Martha J., 23; Mason D., 5; Abraham K., 3; James W., 2/12. All born in Ky.
I cannot find this family in the 1860 census.
1870 census of Bath Co., Ky, White Sulphur precinct, enumerated 13 June, lists on p. 19 as family #133:
Goodpaster, Martha, 43, farmer; James, 20; Noah, 18; Susan, 13; Elizabeth, 13 (bracketed as twins); Jessie, 11; William, 8; David, 4.
The family should include Charles age 13 (from his birth and death records), and the twins should be age 16 (from their birth records.) Maybe his age somehow got applied to the girls? (Census takers very often took ordinary notebooks when making their rounds, and transferred their notes to the official ledgers later. Sometimes lines got dropped in the copying process.)
The following family is their son Abraham with his wife Elizabeth.
1880 census of Bath Co., Ky, Wyoming prec., enumerated 3 June, lists on p. 5 family #39/40:
Goodpaster, Martha, 53; Jessie, son, 20; William N., son, 18; David E., son, 15; Catherine M., dau, 9. All born Ky Ky Ky.
If Catherine is really Martha’s daughter, then either she was born out of wedlock, or David was still living in 1870 even though he was not with the family in the census.
