Notes for Francis Marion McClurg
I believe his full name was General Francis Marion McClurg, based on the 1900 census, where he was listed as “G F M McClurg”, with a son recorded by the same initials, and the 1910 census, where that son was listed as General. Most official records have his name as Marion, but some refer to him as Frank.
His death certificate records Marion McClurg, age 73 years 5 months, birthdate blank, farmer, married, died 13 Nov 1913 in Pine Grove precinct, Rowan Co., Ky, father Alexander McLurg, mother’s maiden name Elizabeth Johnson, both born in Ky, cause of death what looks like “chronic Leueth”, but is probably meant to be chronic heart disease, informant Tom Clifford, Triplett, Ky, burial in McClurg graveyard.
Notes for Sarah Amanda Thomas
Her gravestone in Ditney Ridge Cemetery in Morgan Co., near that of her son Grover Cleveland McClurg, shows her name as Amanda McClurg and has the dates 26 Feb 1853 to 28 Feb 1925, but I cannot find a death record for her. Perhaps she died out of state and was returned to Morgan Co. for burial.
Census
I can find no Sarah or Amanda Thomas age 4 to 8 in the 1860 census of northeastern Kentucky (Rowan, Morgan, Fleming, Nicholas, Bath, Carter, and Lewis counties) with a middle-aged (45 to 58) mother or grandmother named Sarah. Once you open it up to other given names and other regions, there are too many possibilities.
1870 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, enumerated 5 July, lists on p. 10 as family #68:
Thomas, Sarah, 64, farmer; Amanda, 16. Both born in Kentucky.
Notes for Francis Marion & Sarah Amanda (Family)
Sarah Amanda’s children were sometimes recorded under the surname Thomas, such as in the 1880 census and in Clarinda’s first marriage record, but most of the time they went by McClurg. All of her sons were married as McClurgs.
Most of the death certificates of her children list their father as unknown, and their mother’s maiden name as Mandy McClurg.
Census
1880 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Brushy Fork precinct, enumerated 1 June, lists on p. 32 as family #235/278:
Thomas, Sarah, 68, widowed; Sarah M., dau, 27, single; Clarinda, 9, granddau; Zachariah, 5, grandson; Benjamin F., 5, grandson; William H., 2, grandson; Luther W., 7/12, b. Oct, grandson. All born Ky Ky Ky.
Although the relationship is given as daughter, I suspect that the younger Sarah may really be a granddaughter of the elder one. In 1870 they were listed respectively as 64 and 16.
1900 census of Morgan Co., Ky, district 6, enumerated 26 June, lists on p. 22A as family #339/343:
McClurg, Amanda, 47, b. Feb 1853, single (S) overstricken with Wd, mother of 8 children, 8 living; Zachary, son, 27, b. Apr 1873; Morgan, son, 22, b. July 1877; Luther, son, 20, b. Oct 1879; Ollie B., son, 17, b. Mar 1883; Grover C., son, 14, b. July 1885; John C. W., son, 11, b. Feb 1889; Sarah E., granddau, 11, b. Jan 1889.
Sarah E. was the daughter of Clarinda and her first husband Simon Peter Link. The marriage ended in divorce, and Clarinda went back to the name McClurg until she remarried.
